The Gems & Jewellery Value Chain
Thailand's gems and jewellery industry runs from imported rough-stone and precious-metal sourcing through cutting and polishing, design, manufacturing, testing and disclosure, to wholesale, export and retail. Each stage below shows what happens, who is involved, and where the value and constraints sit — expand a stage to see the detail.
Activities
- • Import of rough coloured gemstones, rough diamonds and precious metals
- • Limited domestic gemstone mining (historically significant, now a smaller share of total supply)
- • Precious-metal sourcing including recycled/scrap metal
Who's Involved
- • Rough-stone importers and traders (concentrated in Chanthaburi)
- • Precious-metal refiners and bullion dealers
- • Gemstone dealers
Outputs
- • Rough stones and bullion ready for cutting, treatment or refining
Constraints
- • Thailand imports the large majority of the rough coloured stones it cuts and trades — see Raw Materials & Sourcing below for the customs and origin implications of this.
Activities
- • Faceting and cabochon cutting of coloured stones
- • Heat treatment and other enhancement processes for coloured stones
- • Diamond cutting and polishing
Who's Involved
- • Chanthaburi's cutting and treatment workshops
- • Bangkok-based cutting and polishing operations
Outputs
- • Cut and polished coloured stones and diamonds ready for setting or resale
Constraints
- • Treatment disclosure (heat treatment, filling, and other enhancements) must be accurate and consistent through the chain — see Laboratories, Quality & Disclosure below.
Activities
- • Jewellery design for brand-owner and OEM/ODM programmes
- • CAD modelling and 3D-printed wax/resin prototyping
- • Prototype casting and sample approval
Who's Involved
- • In-house design teams at manufacturers
- • Independent design studios and CAD service providers
Outputs
- • Approved designs and production-ready CAD files/prototypes
Constraints
- • Design and prototyping capability is a genuine BOI-adjacent investment area (R&D/design services) distinct from ordinary jewellery manufacturing — see BOI Investment Incentives below.
Activities
- • Metal casting (lost-wax and other methods)
- • Stone setting, assembly and finishing
- • Plating, polishing and quality finishing
Who's Involved
- • Thai jewellery manufacturers (own-brand, OEM and ODM)
- • Contract manufacturers serving international brands
Outputs
- • Finished gold, silver, diamond and gemstone jewellery ready for testing and export/retail
Constraints
- • Manufacturing capacity spans large SET-listed groups with multi-country factories to smaller specialist workshops — see Key Players below.
Activities
- • Gemstone and diamond identification and grading
- • Precious-metal fineness and hallmark verification
- • Treatment and, where offered, origin-opinion disclosure
Who's Involved
- • GIT (government public-organization laboratory)
- • AIGS and other independent gemological laboratories
Outputs
- • Identification/grading reports accompanying stones and finished jewellery
Constraints
- • A laboratory report is an identification/grading opinion, not a government guarantee of value or a legal title document — see Laboratories, Quality & Disclosure below.
Activities
- • Domestic wholesale trading (concentrated around Bangkok's Jewelry Trade Center and Silom Road district)
- • Export shipment under standard customs, or FTA-preferential, procedures
- • Retail sale domestically and through international distribution networks
Who's Involved
- • Wholesale traders
- • Export manufacturers and distributors
- • Retail brands and outlets
Outputs
- • Jewellery reaching international buyers, distributors and retail customers
Constraints
- • Export customs treatment depends on exact HS/AHTN classification and origin — see "Can rough gemstones enter at zero duty?" and the Customs, Duties & Procedures section below.

Thailand's Global Position
Thailand's gem and jewellery exports (including unwrought gold) reached USD 26,593.14 million in 2025 — its 3rd most important export category and 7.83% of gross exports, per GIT's own official reporting. Excluding unwrought gold, the more representative jewellery and gemstone-trade figure was USD 13,586.84 million. Thailand is also internationally significant in silver jewellery manufacturing and export — GIT's own H1 2026 statistics record USD 178.8 million in silver exports under HS Chapter 71 for the first half of 2026 alone (see the Trade Dashboard below for the full product breakdown) — though this page does not state a global rank for silver or any other category without a comparable, same-year, sourced cross-country dataset, which was not independently verified in this research pass.
Clusters: Chanthaburi & Bangkok

Chanthaburi: Sourcing, Cutting & Treatment
Chanthaburi, roughly 330 kilometres southeast of Bangkok, is Thailand's principal coloured-gemstone trading, cutting and treatment centre — a role dating back centuries. Its weekend gem market, concentrated along Trok Kachang ("Gem Lane"), brings together buyers and traders from around the world. A commonly cited figure, attributed to the Chanthaburi Gem and Jewelry Traders Association via independent trade-press reporting, holds that roughly 80% of Thailand's coloured-gemstone exports are cut and treated in Chanthaburi — shown here with that attribution rather than as an independently re-verified statistic.
Source: Trade-press reporting citing the Chanthaburi Gem and Jewelry Traders Association · Accessed 22 August 2026

Bangkok: Manufacturing, Wholesale & Buyer Access
Bangkok is Thailand's manufacturing, wholesale-trading and international-buyer hub — home to the Jewelry Trade Center and Silom Road district, GIT's headquarters and laboratory, major manufacturers' head offices, and the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (see Trade Shows & Buyer Networking below). Bangkok and Chanthaburi are complementary, not competing, roles within one national value chain — sourcing and cutting concentrated in Chanthaburi, manufacturing scale, buyer access and international trade infrastructure concentrated in Bangkok.

Product Capability
Thailand's manufacturing base spans coloured stones, silver, gold, diamonds, fashion/costume jewellery, and components/contract manufacturing — each with a different customer base, materials profile and export role.
Rubies, sapphires and a wide range of other coloured gemstones — sourced, cut, treated and traded principally through Chanthaburi, then set into jewellery or traded loose to international buyers.
Sterling silver (925) jewellery manufacturing is an internationally significant Thai export category, produced by both large SET-listed groups and specialist manufacturers, mostly for OEM/ODM and private-label export programmes. See the Thai Silver Exporters Association in Associations & Business Networks below.

Gold jewellery manufacturing ranges from investment-grade plain gold jewellery (closely tied to gold-price movements) to gem-set fine gold jewellery for export brands — a category where GIT's own reporting explicitly separates unwrought-gold trade flows from manufactured gold-jewellery articles (see Trade Dashboard below).
Diamond cutting, polishing and trading, alongside diamond-set jewellery manufacturing — including lab-grown diamonds, which Thailand's own trade-fair product categories (see Trade Shows below) list as a distinct, disclosed category from natural diamonds.
Imitation and fashion jewellery using base metals, synthetic stones and non-precious materials — a distinct product category from fine jewellery, serving different price points and retail channels.
Jewellery findings, components, and OEM/ODM contract manufacturing services for international brands — from CAD/design through casting, setting and finishing, serving brand owners who do not manufacture in-house.

Trade Dashboard
Every series below is HS Chapter 71 ("Gem & Jewelry"), Thai-baht/USD value, sourced directly from GIT's live statistics database in collaboration with Thai Customs Department, comparing the first half of 2025 against the first half of 2026 (period: January–June, both years). Gold and articles of jewellery are shown as separate rows — never combined into one "jewellery" figure — precisely because gold's share of the total (47–51%) can swing the headline total independently of actual jewellery manufacturing and trade activity.

Data Scope
Raw Materials & Sourcing
Thailand imports the substantial majority of the rough coloured gemstones it cuts, treats and trades — the country has limited domestic gemstone mining relative to its role as a global cutting and trading centre. Precious-metal inputs include imported gold, silver and platinum bullion, alongside a recycled/scrap-metal stream (jewellery-industry offcuts, refining by-products) that feeds back into manufacturing. Traceability — knowing a stone's or metal's country of origin, chain of custody and any treatment applied — has become an increasingly important buyer requirement internationally, addressed at the company level through supplier due diligence rather than a single Thailand-wide certification scheme (see Responsible Sourcing, AML/KYC & Sustainability below).
Customs, Duties & Procedures
Can rough gemstones enter at zero duty?
No — not automatically. Duty treatment depends on the exact HS/AHTN classification, material, degree of working, origin, declared use, customs procedure and the tariff in force on the declaration date. A zero customs-duty line does not automatically remove import VAT, licensing, declaration or recordkeeping obligations.
Ordinary MFN Tariff Treatment
The standard, non-preferential Most Favoured Nation tariff rate applies unless a preferential or special regime is claimed and qualifies.
FTA Preference
Requires the goods to satisfy the applicable agreement's product-specific rule of origin AND a valid proof/certificate of origin — preference is never automatic just because both countries are FTA members.
Temporary Import & Re-Export
Goods brought in for exhibition, testing or approval and re-exported within a defined period, under Thai Customs' temporary-import procedures — distinct from a permanent import declaration.
Bonded Warehouse / Customs Free Zone
Qualifying customs regimes that can defer or relieve duty on goods held, processed or re-exported under customs control — subject to their own eligibility and procedural requirements.
BOI Privileges
Import-duty exemptions on machinery or production materials are available ONLY to a BOI-approved project operating under its specific investment promotion certificate — not to a general importer.
Customs Duty vs. Import VAT & Other Taxes
Customs duty and import VAT are separate charges assessed on separate bases — a zero or reduced customs-duty rate does not by itself remove VAT, excise or other applicable taxes and fees.
How to Verify and Claim the Correct Treatment
Rough vs. cut/polished vs. set; natural vs. synthetic/lab-grown; the specific metal, alloy or stone type.
Not only the 4-digit heading — Thailand's HS code is 11 digits (8-digit AHTN plus 3 national statistical digits).
Confirm the current MFN rate and any applicable preferential rate for that exact 11-digit code, on the declaration date.
Determine whether the goods qualify as originating under general rules or under a specific FTA's rules of origin.
Chapter 71's rules of origin vary by agreement and by product — confirm the exact rule that applies, plus any direct-consignment/shipment conditions.
E.g. ATIGA Form D / e-Form D, AANZFTA Form AANZ / e-Form AANZ, RCEP Form RCEP or Declaration of Origin — the correct form depends on the agreement claimed.
Including any licensing, precious-metal-specific controls, and correct customs valuation method.
These procedures generally must be elected and documented before or at the point of clearance, not retroactively.
Thai Customs and FTA partner-country customs authorities can request supporting records after clearance.
From Thai Customs directly, or through a licensed customs broker, before shipment — particularly for high-value or first-time shipments.
Tariff Verification Note
FTA Market Access & Rules of Origin
Thailand's HS Chapter 71 gems and jewellery trade can access preferential tariffs under several agreements Thailand is party to — subject, in every case, to that agreement's own product-specific rule of origin, valid proof of origin, and any direct-consignment/shipment requirements. An FTA does not create an automatic zero tariff: preference must be actively claimed and must qualify.
ATIGA (ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement)
Form D / e-Form D, or an Origin Declaration under the ASEAN-Wide Self-Certification scheme where applicable
AANZFTA (ASEAN–Australia–New Zealand)
Form AANZ / e-Form AANZ
RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership)
Form RCEP or a Declaration of Origin, per the exporting party's implementation
Rules of Origin Note

BOI & Investment Support
Ordinary jewellery trading, wholesaling or retail is not automatically BOI-promoted. BOI incentives attach to specific eligible manufacturing, design, testing, technology or export-support activities and project-level conditions confirmed in BOI's current Investment Promotion Guide — not to "jewellery" as a general category.
Gem & Jewelry Industrial Zone
- A dedicated BOI real-estate-development activity (7.9.1.2) for zones with at least 100 rai, at least 40% allocated to gem/jewellery operations, plus sales area, security and exhibition facilities
- Confirmed directly on BOI's own official activity-list PDF — incentive tier A3
Manufacture of Gems, Jewelry or Parts
- Manufacturing of gems, jewellery, or parts, including raw materials and prototypes, is consistently cited across independent legal/investment-advisory sources at incentive tier A4
- Not independently opened directly on boi.go.th in this pass — confirm current tier and conditions with BOI
Design, R&D & Testing Services
- BOI separately promotes engineering design, R&D, and scientific-laboratory/testing-service activities that can apply to jewellery design studios and gem-testing facilities
- Distinct pathway from manufacturing — evaluated on its own conditions
Investment Verification

Laboratories, Quality, Disclosure & Buyer Confidence
Thailand's gem and jewellery testing infrastructure includes GIT (Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand), a Thai governmental public organization under the Public Organization Act B.E. 2542, established by Royal Decree in 2003 under the supervision of the Ministry of Commerce, and AIGS (Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences), a private gemological school and laboratory founded in 1978, Asia's first professional gemological laboratory. Both issue gemstone, diamond and (for GIT) precious-metal identification and grading reports. Buyers and partners should understand several distinctions clearly: treatment disclosure (heat treatment, filling and other enhancements must be accurately disclosed, not assumed); natural versus synthetic/laboratory-grown material (a materially different product category, not a quality grade); an origin opinion (where offered) is a scientific opinion based on current testing methods, not an absolute guarantee; and metal fineness/hallmarking should be confirmed against the applicable standard for the destination market. A laboratory report — from GIT, AIGS or any other laboratory — is an identification/grading opinion, not a government guarantee of value, an investment appraisal, or proof of legal title.

Responsible Sourcing, AML/KYC & Sustainability
High-value gem and jewellery transactions carry documented sector-wide risks that buyers, manufacturers and traders should manage directly rather than assume are handled elsewhere: supplier due diligence and provenance verification for rough stones and precious metals; sanctions screening for counterparties; anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer (AML/KYC) obligations, which may apply to dealers handling high-value cash transactions under Thailand's AML framework (confirm current scope directly with AMLO); and human-rights and environmental due diligence across the sourcing chain. This page does not make or repeat any unsupported ethical-certification claim about Thailand's gem and jewellery sector as a whole — specific certifications (such as Responsible Jewellery Council membership) apply to the specific company holding them, not to the sector generally, and should be verified directly with the certifying body.
