Fewer than a dozen workshops in Thailand still produce khon masks using the full traditional process — layered paper-mache, natural lacquer, and gold leaf applied by hand over several weeks per piece.

Several of these workshops now offer short apprenticeship visits for visitors genuinely interested in the craft, not just a souvenir purchase.
