Services and Merchandise Trade Are Not Combined
These figures cover cosmetics and personal-care merchandise trade only. Spa-services revenue, medical-tourism visitor volumes and hospital/wellness-clinic activity figures could not be independently verified in this research pass (no live web access this session) and are intentionally omitted rather than estimated — services and merchandise trade are different measures and are never combined into one market-size claim on this page.

Nuad Thai and Professional Spa Services
Nuad Thai (traditional Thai massage) was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019, recognising it as a living body of therapeutic knowledge and practice. Professional delivery in Thailand sits within a licensing and training framework: health establishments offering spa and massage services are licensed under Thailand's health-establishment regulatory system (administered by the Department of Health Service Support, DHSS), and DHSS also maintains a Health Service Standard (HSS) premium-standard scheme for higher-tier spa and wellness establishments.
Not Every Spa Is Certified
Not every spa in Thailand carries HSS premium-standard recognition or the same licence category — status varies by establishment and should be confirmed directly with the venue or checked against DHSS's own records rather than assumed from marketing material.

Beauty Products
Cosmetics and personal-care products (skincare, haircare, fragrance, soap) are regulated by Thai FDA through a product-notification system ("Jor.Kor."), covering manufacturers, contract manufacturers and importers. Spa products (oils, scrubs, compresses, amenities) generally fall under the same cosmetics framework when applied topically for cosmetic purposes. Neither category is described on this page as treating, curing or preventing disease.
Explore the full Cosmetics & Wellness Gateway
Treatment Services
Non-invasive beauty services (facials, body treatments, certain aesthetic devices used cosmetically) are regulated differently from aesthetic-clinic medical services, which involve a licensed medical practitioner and fall under Thailand's medical-service and health-establishment licensing framework. Medical devices and medicines used in aesthetic or wellness settings are separate Thai FDA product classes from cosmetics, each with its own registration pathway. This page does not describe any spa or beauty service as a medical treatment.

Medical Wellness & Hospital Ecosystem
Thailand's wellness ecosystem spans several distinct categories that should not be conflated: licensed hospitals (regulated medical facilities), medical-wellness clinics and preventive-health programs, rehabilitation and longevity/wellness centres, destination wellness resorts, spa groups, and product companies. Each category carries different licensing, staffing and regulatory requirements.

Some Categories Show Zero Entries
Hospitals, Medical Wellness, Retreats, Spa Groups and Beauty Services show no entries here because no specific operator in those categories could be independently confirmed against its own official site in this research pass — this is a research-access limitation, not an indication that no such businesses exist in Thailand. See Verified Operators & Brands below and the Medical Wellness & Healthcare Gateway link above for how to find current operators.

Wellness Destinations & Clusters
Thailand's wellness economy is concentrated across a handful of established regional clusters, each with its own character and infrastructure — described below by verified strengths rather than unsupported rankings.

Traditional Medicine & Botanical Value Chain
Thailand's traditional-medicine and botanical value chain runs from herb cultivation and hot compresses through ingredient sourcing, formulation, quality control and practitioner training. The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM), under the Ministry of Public Health, promotes and regulates Thai traditional medicine, alternative medicine and the herbal economy.
Visit DTAM's official siteTraditional Knowledge, Wellness Use, Registered Products and Clinical Claims Are Different Things
This page distinguishes four different things that are often blurred in marketing: traditional cultural knowledge (heritage practice, not a regulatory status), general wellness use (a cosmetic or lifestyle application), registered herbal products (a specific Thai FDA or DTAM registration category), and clinical claims (which require a different, medical evidence standard entirely). No traditional-medicine content on this page makes a clinical claim.

Healthcare & Wellness Technology
Categories of technology relevant to Thailand's wellness and healthcare sector include telemedicine, AI-assisted diagnostic imaging, robotic-assisted surgery, rehabilitation technology, genomics, wearable health devices, digital booking platforms and health-data systems.
No Named-Institution Claims Without Verification
Specific, named-institution examples of technology adoption (which hospital or clinic uses which system, and since when) could not be independently verified in this research pass and are intentionally not attributed to any institution here, consistent with this page's rule that a technology claim must be attributed to a named institution and date or not published at all. This page does not imply nationwide adoption of any technology.

Trade & Export Potential
Merchandise trade figures below cover cosmetics, personal-care and related product categories only (relevant HS lines include Chapter 33 groups such as 3303 perfumes/toilet waters, 3304 beauty/skincare preparations, 3305 hair preparations, 3307 other perfumery/toiletry preparations, and relevant 3401 soap lines). Spa services, hospital activity and wellness tourism are services, not merchandise, and are not captured by customs merchandise codes — they are never combined with the export figures below.

Identified by DITP; individual market values were not independently broken out in the source reviewed.
An FTA Does Not Replace Licensing or Product Registration
A free trade agreement lowers tariffs on qualifying merchandise trade — it does not replace Thai FDA product registration, professional and health-establishment licensing, or medical-device controls, all of which apply independently of any FTA.

BOI Investment & Incentives
Incentives attach to specific eligible promoted activities and project conditions confirmed in BOI's current Investment Promotion Guide — not to "wellness", "spa" or "beauty" as a category by itself.
Qualifying Medical Services & Clinical Research
- Higher-value medical-service and clinical-research activities are the kind of category historically covered by BOI's promoted-activity list for the healthcare sector.
- Eligibility, category/tier and conditions must be confirmed against BOI's current guide for the specific service.
R&D, Biotechnology & Digital Health
- Research and development, biotechnology, and digital-health activities are general BOI-promoted categories potentially relevant to wellness-technology and diagnostics ventures.
- Relevant to genomics, health-data platforms and telemedicine infrastructure, under general R&D/digital-health promoted-activity terms.
Medical Devices
- Medical-device manufacturing and related activities are a distinct BOI-promoted category from cosmetics or general wellness products.
- Applies under general medical-device promoted-activity terms — a separate Thai FDA product class from cosmetics.
Cosmetics & Ingredient R&D
- Cosmetics manufacturing itself is not a named, standalone BOI-eligible activity (confirmed directly for T3's Cosmetics & Wellness Gateway) — but cosmetics-adjacent R&D and ingredient-development activities may fall under general R&D promoted-activity terms.
- Confirm whether a specific ingredient-R&D or formulation-science project qualifies under BOI's current R&D activity list.
Confirm Before Relying
This page does not promise automatic approval or a tax holiday for an ordinary spa, salon or clinic. BOI's current activity list, codes and conditions were not independently re-verified in this research pass (no live web access this session) — confirm current eligibility, category/tier, conditions and incentives directly with BOI before relying on any of them for a specific project.

Sources & Methodology
This page was built without live web-search or fetch access this session, so it deliberately reuses exact figures, institution URLs and association records already independently verified elsewhere on this site, rather than re-deriving or guessing new ones. Every operator name suggested for research (Bumrungrad, BDMS/Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej, VitalLife, BDMS Wellness Clinic, Chiva-Som, Kamalaya, RAKxa, Health Land, Let's Relax, Divana, Oasis Spa) was intentionally left unpublished because it could not be confirmed against its own official site this session — see Verified Operators & Brands. A follow-up research pass with live web access is recommended to confirm and add these operators, current visitor/tourism figures, named technology-adoption examples, current BOI activity codes, and the two unverified trade-show records.
